1800 block of Manzanita Lane
(Residential Burglary) Unknown suspect(s) entered
the victim's residence and took several pills from
prescription bottles along with a small amount of
loose change. There were no signs of forced entry to
the residence and it is unknown how entry was made.

8 p.m. - 9 a.m.
1200 block of Pine Avenue
(Petty Theft from Vehicles) An iPod was stolen from
the front seat of an unlocked vehicle that was
parked in a driveway and loose change was stolen
from the console of an unlocked vehicle that was
parked in front of a different residence.

11 p.m. - 9 a.m.
300 block of 19th Street
(Garage Burglary) Unknown suspect(s) took three
unsecured bicycles from a garage which was believed
to have been left open overnight.

6/17/10 - 6/18/10
8:30 a.m. - 12:29 p.m.
200 block of 41st Street
(Garage Burglary) Unknown suspect(s) took two
unsecured bicycles from inside a garage. The garage
was closed and locked but there were no signs of
forced entry.

IN THE NEWS...
Just one number can unlock your personal
information, your private conversations and even
your whereabouts to smart-phone hackers.
Crowds of revelers swarmed South Bay beaches on the
Fourth of July and kept lifeguards busy on the
Monday holiday but caused no major problems,
officials said.
A strong earthquake
shook southern Mexico early Wednesday morning,
reportedly killing one person in Oaxaca and being
felt as far away as Mexico City and the states
of Veracruz, Puebla, and Guerrero. The quake struck
at 2:22 a.m. with an epicenter in rural southwestern
Oaxaca near the Pacific Ocean. It lasted half a
minute and was strong enough to shake buildings in
Mexico City, sending
frightened people onto the street despite the
hour.
The only death reported as of Thursday morning was
in Oaxaca near the epicenter, where a
man was killed when a beam fell.

demonstrating many of their capabilities to local
families at up to eight HBNW blocks in Hermosa
Beach.

Night Out Program (NNO)
LIVE Tuesday, August 3rd from 6:15p.m. - 9:00p.m.
NNO 2009 involved 37 million people in 15,449
communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories,
Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
We have won national recognition for the past three
years that we have participated in our population
category.
It is your party.
It is your neighborhood.
Nothing elaborate is needed or it can be as big as
your imagination.
Doing such a simple gesture will go a long way in
maintaining a relationship with your neighbors.
Only on this one night, all fees are waived and
Public Works will close down your street to have a
block party. This is a unique opportunity to
encourage your neighbors to come out of their homes
and enjoy each others company. A procession of
HB Police & their vehicles, HB
Firefighters/Paramedics & their vehicles, HB Public
Works and our public officials will be on your
street to meet you and your residents! See the
members from each department and meet Sparky the
Fire Dog.

Everyone plays a role in creating and
maintaining a safe environment.
Report Crime - Don't assume that your
neighbors have already reported the crime or
that the police already know. Report
criminal or suspicious activity each and
every time it occurs.

Reasons for
calling the non-emergency number include,
but are not limited to the following:

You want to report a nuisance, such as a
noise or parking complaint.

To report a non-emergency crime, one
that did not just occur, and the
suspect(s) are not in the immediate
area.

You have questions about something
suspicious occurring in your
neighborhood, and you are not sure it is
criminal activity.

Solicitor just came to your door or are
in the neighborhood.
-
Trash diggers.
-
Unusual foot
traffic.
-
People you
don't recognize walking your block with
no seemingly specific direction or
purpose.
-
Parked,
occupied vehicles at unusual hours.
-
Abandoned
vehicles.

Business
transactions conducted from vehicles.
-
Unfamiliar
people peering into parked vehicles.
-
Person
removing vehicle accessories.
Be alert and observant wherever you are and
learn to recognize signs of criminal
behavior. Report all crime to the HBPD even
if it is only an attempt. Crime cannot be
controlled or prevented if it is not
reported. By reporting crimes and suspicious
activities you can protect yourself and
others.

The ShakeOutis an

before a major earthquake happens again here in
California. To help we will be sending you
preparedness tips each month, following the
Seven Steps to
Earthquake Safety:

should learn what to do during an earthquake,
whether you're at home, at work, at school, or just
out and about. taking the proper actions,
sucha s "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" can save lives
and reduce your risk of death or injury. During
earthquakes, drop to the floor, take cover under a
sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly.
Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
NOTE:
Firefighters, preparedness officials, and other
experts agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the
best way to protect yourself during earthquakes.

"Map
Your Neighborhood" (MYN) is a program designed
to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters.
It is a program that HBNW has adopted and highly
encourages Block Captains to attend a class and
implement the program on their street.
MYN will help you to:

Learn the "9 Steps to Take Immediately Following
a Disaster" to secure your home and to protect
your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly
following disaster and these steps will help you
to quickly and safely take actions that can
minimize damage and protect lives.

Identify the Skills and Equipment each neighbor
has that would be useful in an effective
disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have
supplies and skills helps your disaster response
be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to
the response in a meaningful way.
-
Create a Neighborhood Map identifying the
locations of natural gas for quick response if
needed.
-
Create a Contact List that helps identify those
with specific needs such as elderly, disabled,
or children who may be home alone during certain
hours of the day.
-
Work together as a team to evaluate your
neighborhood during the first hour following a
disaster and take the necessary actions.

Advisory Commission applied for and received a Micro
Enrichment Grant from the Beach Cities Health

and distribute 138 Disaster Supply Fanny Packs to
disabled and/or homebound seniors residing in
Hermosa Beach.
