Time: 17:21
Burglary
On Wednesday 6-23-10 between 1600 and 1630
hours, unknown suspect(s) stole property
from a vehicle which was parked in the
1200-Block of 9th Street. This vehicle's
front passenger's side window had been
rolled down and it is unclear whether its
doors were locked. Among the items stolen
was a necklace worth approximately $40,000.

6 p.m. - 8 a.m.
200 block of Aviation Place
(Theft from Vehicle) The victim parked his vehicle
in the garage area but is unsure if it was locked.
When he returned the driver's side door was open and
several items were missing including a credit card
holder with cards inside, sunglasses and headphones.
No suspects were seen or heard.

3:15 p.m. - 9 a.m.
1400 block of MBB
(Garage Theft) The victim closed her garage door
with a key and returned to find the door open.
Unknown suspect(s) took a bicycle and massage table
from the garage.

9:40 a.m.
500 block of 14th Street
(Attempted Residential Burglary) The resident was
inside when he heard a gate open and saw an unknown
male subject open the sliding screen door which
leads to the kitchen. The subject became startled
and exited the property through the gate. When asked
what he was doing the subject said he was at the
wrong residence and drove away in an older model
black two door pick-up truck. The subject is male,
possibly Hispanic, approximately 38 - 45 years old,
5'10" to 5'11' tall with a large build.

5 p.m. - 8 a.m.
3300 block of N. Ocean Drive
(Burglary from Garage) Unknown suspect(s) stole four
unsecured bicycles from the garage which is some
times left open for construction workers.

10 Russian secret agents arrested in U.S.
WASHINGTON (KABC) --
Following a multi-year investigation, ten
people were arrested for allegedly serving as
illegal agents of the Russian government in the
United States, the Department of Justice said
Monday.
California is facing what could be the state's
biggest
outbreak of
pertussis since 1958, according to its top
public health official. This contagious disease is
more commonly known as
whooping cough due the distinctive whoop that
occurs when sufferers cough and gasp for breath.

4th Annual National Night Out Program (NNO)
Starting at 6:15pm on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch, Police, Fire and
Public Works will be meeting with neighbors and
demonstrating many of their capabilities to local
families at up to eight HBNW blocks in Hermosa
Beach.
Attention HBNW block captains:

Most people avoid getting to know their neighbors
because everyone is so busy, and it isn't always
convenient to go knock on someone's door to
introduce yourself. However, if you make yourself
available, there are always opportunities!

Night Out Program (NNO)
LIVE Tuesday, August 3rd from 6:15p.m. - 9:00p.m.
NNO 2009 involved 37 million people in 15,449
communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories,
Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
We have won national recognition for the past three
years that we have participated in our population
category.
It is your party.
It is your neighborhood.
Nothing elaborate is needed or it can be as big as
your imagination.
Doing such a simple gesture will go a long way in
maintaining a relationship with your neighbors.
Only on this one night, all fees are waived and
Public Works will close down your street to have a
block party. This is a unique opportunity to
encourage your neighbors to come out of their homes
and enjoy each others company. A procession of
HB Police & their vehicles, HB
Firefighters/Paramedics & their vehicles, HB Public
Works and our public officials will be on your
street to meet you and your residents! See the
members from each department and meet Sparky the
Fire Dog.

Everyone plays a role in creating and
maintaining a safe environment.
Report Crime - Don't assume that your
neighbors have already reported the crime or
that the police already know. Report
criminal or suspicious activity each and
every time it occurs.

Reasons for
calling the non-emergency number include,
but are not limited to the following:

You want to report a nuisance, such as a
noise or parking complaint.

To report a non-emergency crime, one
that did not just occur, and the
suspect(s) are not in the immediate
area.

You have questions about something
suspicious occurring in your
neighborhood, and you are not sure it is
criminal activity.
-
Solicitor just came to your door or are
in the neighborhood.
-
Trash diggers.
-
Unusual foot
traffic.
-
People you
don't recognize walking your block with
no seemingly specific direction or
purpose.
-
Parked,
occupied vehicles at unusual hours.
-
Abandoned
vehicles.
-
Business
transactions conducted from vehicles.
-
Unfamiliar
people peering into parked vehicles.
-
Person
removing vehicle accessories.
Be alert and observant wherever you are and
learn to recognize signs of criminal
behavior. Report all crime to the HBPD even
if it is only an attempt. Crime cannot be
controlled or prevented if it is not
reported. By reporting crimes and suspicious
activities you can protect yourself and
others.

The 2010 Great California ShakeOut on October 21 is
now less than five months away, and already more
than 3.7 million Californians are registered
to participate!
If you or your organization has not yet renewed your
registration for 2010, please

to easily update your information and confirm your
participation in this year's drill. With your
help, we can reach 4.0 million participants
this week (especially if school districts and
colleges re-register now). If you have renewed
your registration already, thank you!
Who will ShakeOut with you?
When we think about preparedness, we usually
consider what we need to have in our disaster
supplies kits, how we will protect ourselves, or how
we will reopen our businesses. These are important
factors in speeding our own recovery. However, your
recovery will also depend on how prepared your
neighbors and community are, including businesses or
organizations! Individuals should encourage
their employer to be prepared (so they will
continue to have a job), and organizations should
encourage their employees to be prepared at home (so
that employee's can be at work with less worry about
their homes or loved ones). Organizations
should also encourage their clients, customers, and
suppliers to be prepared, so that work can continue
or resume quickly.
A great way to help your community, your employer,
and others get prepared, reduce injuries, and speed
recovery is to encourage them to
register to
participatein the Great California
ShakeOut! Let them know you are participating
and ask them to join you, perhaps by using email,
Facebook, Twitter, or information on your website.
You can also display posters, distribute flyers, and
use other materials much available on the
ShakeOut Resources
page, which also includes suggested text for
newsletters or emails you might send.
Prepare, Protect, and Recover!
The ShakeOut is an opportunity for us to prepare
together, hopefully before a major earthquake
happens again here in California. To help we will be
sending you preparedness tips each month, following
the
Seven Steps to
Earthquake Safety:
 Step
4: Is Your Place Safe? Most houses
and other buildings are not as safe as they could
be, unless they were built recently. Buildings
that have raised foundations, large openings on the
ground level, brick walls, and other factors are
more likely to be damaged. But in most cases
there are things that can be done to
secure your building
to withstand strong earthquakes. Also,
earthquake insurance
provides a strong foundation to help you recover
quickly. Homeowners must purchase an additional
policy to be covered for earthquakes in California.
NOTE:
Firefighters, preparedness officials, and other
experts agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the
best way to protect yourself during earthquakes.

connected to your residents until you have had this

"Map
Your Neighborhood" (MYN) is a program designed
to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters.
It is a program that HBNW has adopted and highly
encourages Block Captains to attend a class and
implement the program on their street.
MYN will help you to:

Learn the "9 Steps to Take Immediately Following
a Disaster" to secure your home and to protect
your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly
following disaster and these steps will help you
to quickly and safely take actions that can
minimize damage and protect lives.

Identify the Skills and Equipment each neighbor
has that would be useful in an effective
disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have
supplies and skills helps your disaster response
be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to
the response in a meaningful way.
-
Create a Neighborhood Map identifying the
locations of natural gas for quick response if
needed.
-
Create a Contact List that helps identify those
with specific needs such as elderly, disabled,
or children who may be home alone during certain
hours of the day.
-
Work together as a team to evaluate your
neighborhood during the first hour following a
disaster and take the necessary actions.

disabled and/or homebound seniors residing in
