FIRE CHIEF LANTZER'S CORNER

Where were you when Haiti suffered a 7.0
earthquake? I was working in my
office when I received an e-mail from the USGS over my Blackberry with the following in the subject line: 2010-01-12 21:53:09
(Mw 7.0) HAITI REGION 18.5 -72.4 (29033). Being a student of current affairs and history, I immediately realized the potential
negative impact of this event on Haiti.
I rotated in my chair 180 degrees and turned
on my 10" screen television. I monitored CNN for about five minutes, but there was nothing about the earthquake. My hope
was that "Haiti Region" meant well offshore and that the poor country had been spared. So, I turned off the TV and re-focused
on the piles of paper on my desk.
After another 30 minutes or so, I decided to
check the news stations again. This time they were talking about it, but information was scarce and there were no pictures.
They were receiving sporadic reports about a plane that was able to take off after the earthquake, but nothing very specific.
The next day, though, the images and reports
started rolling in. It was as bad as that initial feeling I had when I received the USGS notification.
In looking at all the damage in Haiti one
would be reasonable to question emergency providers recommendation that people "duck, cover, and hold" in the event of an
earthquake. There is video from Haiti showing people running for the exits when the earthquake struck. Pictures of the
collapsed buildings everywhere in Port-au-Prince support their decision to bale out of the structure.
In a place with a poor and/or poorly enforced
building code, that is a reasonable response. However, there are reasons why we have strict building and fire codes.
While that same earthquake in our region would result in a tremendous amount of damage, there would not be the wholesale loss of
structures as occurred in Haiti. A look at our State's past earthquakes and the performance of most of our buildings bears
this out. Therefore, "duck, cover, and hold" is your best bet for survival in the event of an earthquake here.
Duck, cover, and hold is:
·
Duck or drop down to the floor.
·
Take cover under a sturdy desk or
table.
·
Hold onto the sturdy piece of furniture
and be prepared to move with it.

IN THE NEWS...
...Ever get that feeling you're being watched?
As amusing as this video is, it makes a great point. Every day our kids are watching us... listening and
learning how to become responsible adults. And the best way we can help is by setting a good example. Thanks to all of you who
do.
The South Bay Coalition was originally established in 1987 out of a growing concern about
alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by youth in the South Bay. The coalition members invite you to use this site as a resource to
find, post and share your ideas, tips and techniques to help our youth avoid the pitfalls of substance abuse.
City Council Agenda Item to be
informed about:
The initial concern is how this proposal will work against community building,
cohesion, working together, etc.
An LA Times article reported their creation of a water conservation ordinance has
encouraged vigilantism amongst neighbors. Another letter to an editor further showed an example of one neighbor being pitted
against another regarding water use.
This ordinance may end up making criminals out of otherwise upstanding citizens.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The next CERT Academy starts February 4th. We need to fill this class. Take a moment to think of someone or
even two that you can steer toward taking this valuable training. Many people are watching the news of the disaster in Haiti
and it is a good time to let your friends, neighbors and workmates know about the CERT program. The application is on the city
web site and here is a link
http://www.redondo.org/depts/fire/cert_academy.asp
Please see
www.saferhermosabeach.com for more training opportunities available for residents.
The Great California
ShakeOut!
The recent earthquakes in Haiti
and Northern California remind us how important it is to be prepared- as individuals, organizations, communities, and beyond. Read
below for what you can do today!
Haiti:
The devastation of the 7.0
magnitude quake in Haiti is still being assessed, but clearly this earthquake will rank among the most destructive in history. The
immense tragedy demonstrates how a natural disaster can become a man-made catastrophe due to poor construction and inadequate
infrastructure.
Northern California:
The 6.5 earthquake off the
Coast of Humboldt County was smaller and centered more than 20 miles off the coast. Our strict building codes resulted in far fewer
losses than if such an earthquake were to shake a less prepared country. But images of fallen furniture and other contents show how
much damage can still happen. Also, videos of the earthquake show people dangerously running outside during the shaking, while
others protected themselves because they practiced "drop, cover, and hold on" in school or during the Great California ShakeOut!
Now is the time to take
action... to protect yourself, and help others
-
It is 9 months till the 2010
ShakeOut Drill on October 21, at 10:21 a.m, and registration is now open! The goal for 2010 is 10 million
participants, including you. You can go to
http://www.shakeout.org/register/ to participate for 2010.
-
There are many things you
can do to reduce
losses from happening in your home and community. The preparedness theme for ShakeOut 2010 is "Secure Your
Space"-strap furniture and large appliances to walls, secure electronics and other objects, and much more. Learn
how at
daretoprepare.org.
Thank you for your participation and commitment to earthquake safety!
It's been over a week since the
Haitian earthquake devastated the country. Sadly, at this point, finding survivors is becoming increasingly rare. Still, there
are glorious exceptions -- like Kiki, the young boy who flashed a million-dollar smile after being lifted from the rubble.
Low-tech radios connect some Haitians - CNN.com
In the brutal aftermath of Haiti's earthquake, Jean-Robert Gaillard turned to his
low-tech radio for solace and for a lifeline.
Forecasters said a powerful storm cell capable of tornado-like conditions was headed
toward South Bay beach communities and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Hermosa Beach residents received an automated phone call from the
city urging them to stay indoors.
A powerful storm that hit the Southern California coast this
afternoon caused at least one tornado, four water spouts and winds of up to 80 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

MAP
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
READY THE RESIDENT CLASS

"Map
Your Neighborhood" (MYN) is a program designed to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters. It is a program that HBNW has
adopted and highly encourages Block Captains to attend a class and implement the program on their street.
MYN will help you to:
-
Learn the "9 Steps to Take
Immediately Following a Disaster" to secure your home and to protect your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly
following disaster and these steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and
protect lives.
-
Identify the Skills and Equipment
each neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and
skills helps your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute to the response in a meaningful
way.
-
Create a Neighborhood Map
identifying the locations of natural gas for quick response if needed.
-
Create a Contact List that helps
identify those with specific needs such as elderly, disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours
of the day.
-
Work together as a team to
evaluate your neighborhood during the first hour following a disaster and take the necessary actions.
